A Brief Overview About the Cultural Association of Tigrai
Aims of the Association
The Cultural Association of Tigrai was officialy inaugurated and registered as a local NGO in 1995,to promote cultural development in the National Regional state of Tigray.Its head office is in Mekelle,with branch offices in the sub regions and in Addis Abeba.Membership is open to all, irrespective of their political affiliation, religious background or ethnic identity.The Association aims at playing a catalytic role for the strengthening of the indigenous capacity of the people in the development of their tangible and intangible useful heritage and their protection and conservation through awareness creation, promotion and advocacy.
Major Activities undertaken
Establishment of the School of Fine Arts
One of the major activities of the Cultural Association of Tigrai is the establishment of the junior College of Fine Arts in Mekelle,which caters to students with particular interst in music,arts and the theatrical arts. In has already produced young artists who are enhancement of cultural development and concervation of being engaged in various governmental and nongovernmental organizaitions.
Restitution of some Cultural Heritages From Abroad
one of the objectives of the C.A.T is the resititution of the various cultural heritage which were taken abroad during the second World War or due to theft. In respect to this, the C.A.T,with the assistance of concerned individuals abroad succeeded in the return from Europe of 124 objects of heritage, some of which dated more than 800 years old.The process of return of these objects, some of which were taken from other parts of Ethiopia and were returned to their respective sources,took about 2 years.That was the first time in which so large collections of cultiral heritage was returned to Ethiopia at one time.For example , afew of these items pictures are displayed here ......

In collaboration with the C.A.T.,Paris Museum organized an exhibition in Paris displaying the aforementioned Ethiopian heritage artifacts before they were returned. The same items of heritages were also exhibited in spain with the concent of C.A.T. and in New York before that.On their arrival in Ethiopia they were displayed in the branch office of C.A.T, in Addis Abeba and the occation was reported in the Ethiopian Herald of 8th of August 2000.
